New Delhi. The country's politics is heated up over 'One Country One Election'. Although the Constitution Amendment Bill related to this has been approved by the Lok Sabha, it may take many years to implement it. Even after this bill is passed by the Parliament, it is believed that the elections of Lok Sabha and all the Legislative Assemblies will be held only in 2034.
To implement this, after the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, assembly elections can be held for a period till the 2034 Lok Sabha elections. This is so that in 2034, the term of all the assemblies ends along with the office of the Lok Sabha and one country one election can be implemented.
Simultaneous elections have been held in the country before
The idea of holding simultaneous elections is not new, Lok Sabha and Assembly elections were held simultaneously in the country earlier also. In fact, elections were held for the first time in the country in the year 1951-52. During that time, Lok Sabha and Assembly elections were held simultaneously. However, since 1967, the tradition has deteriorated. Sometimes the state assembly had to be dissolved, and sometimes the Lok Sabha elections were held earlier. The situation has become such that now elections are held somewhere or the other in the country every year.
