National Youth Day 2025: Why is National Youth Day linked to Swami Vivekananda's birth anniversary?
Every year on 12 January we celebrate National Youth Day (National Youth Day 2025). This day is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda (Swami Vivekananda Jayanti 2025) who was a great saint philosopher of India and a source of inspiration for the youth. This day is dedicated to empowering the youth, promoting their development and highlighting their role in nation building.
New Delhi. National Youth Day 2025: Swami Vivekananda, whose real name was Narendranath Dutt, is recorded in history as a scholar who considered service to humanity as his supreme religion. Born on January 12, 1863 in Bengal, Swami Vivekananda was an Indian monk who gained international fame with his fluent speech at the religious conference in Chicago, America.
Due to his fiery and candid speeches, he became extremely popular, especially among the youth. This is why the Government of India decided to celebrate his birthday as 'National Youth Day'. Dedicated to the service and philanthropy of humanity, Swami Vivekananda founded the Ramakrishna Mission in Kolkata in 1897. Subsequently, in 1898, he founded the Ramakrishna Math in Belur on the banks of the river Ganges.He named these institutions after his guru Ramakrishna Paramahansa. In 1984, Swami Vivekananda's birthday (Swami Vivekananda Jayanti) was declared as National Youth Day and since then every year on January 12, this day is dedicated to motivating and uplifting the youth.

To spread the thoughts and ideals of Swami Vivekananda to the youth and inspire them, the Government of India declared January 12 as National Youth Day in 1984. On this day, various programs and activities are organized across the country involving the youth. The aim of these programs is to inculcate the spirit of national unity, social harmony and national service among the youth.
