Talks between India and America on nuclear energy
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump have reaffirmed their faith in nuclear energy, keeping energy security in mind during their US visit. In fact, after talks between the two leaders at the White House on Thursday, they reiterated their commitment to work together on US-designed nuclear reactors in India through large-scale localization and possible technology transfer.
Civil nuclear deal will be expedited
Let us inform you that historic civil nuclear agreements were signed between India and the US in 2008. There has been no progress in the talks since then. No new American nuclear reactor has reached Indian soil in the 21st century. Now to end the deadlock between the two countries, both the leaders have shown interest not only in building large reactors but also in building advanced small modular reactors in India.
America is preparing to install a reactor in India
Let us tell you that the Indian government and Westinghouse are also discussing the project of building six 1,000 megawatt nuclear reactors in Kovvada, Andhra Pradesh. At the same time, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump have also talked about America designing and giving the reactor to India and building the reactor in India by transferring the technology.
What did PM Modi say?
During the joint briefing, PM Modi and Trump welcomed the Budget 2025 announcements to amend the Atomic Energy Act and the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act (CLNDA) for nuclear reactors.
According to the statement, it was also decided to establish a bilateral arrangement called CLNDA, which will address the issue of civil liability and facilitate cooperation between Indian and US industry in the production and deployment of nuclear reactors.
American NSA also spoke to PM Modi
PM Modi also met US National Security Advisor Michael Waltz on Thursday. During their meeting, the two leaders discussed industrial cooperation and civilian nuclear energy, with an emphasis on small modular reactors.
What did the Indian Foreign Secretary say?
After the conclusion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's US visit, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said that an agreement has been reached between the two countries to realise the potential in civil nuclear energy, build US-designed nuclear reactors in India and take this process forward through large-scale localisation as well as technology transfer.
The Foreign Secretary said that the two countries have been discussing cooperation in small modular reactors for some time and this was discussed again today. The obstacles that had been preventing this cooperation from materialising due to certain legal provisions that existed in India in the past years have already started to be removed.
Atomic energy mission announced in the budget
It is worth noting that on February 1, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had announced the 'Nuclear Energy Mission for Developed India'. Just after this announcement, there have been talks between India and the US regarding the nuclear sector. During her speech, Nirmala Sitharaman had said that the development of at least 100 gigawatts of nuclear energy by 2047 is "essential for our energy transition efforts." Dailymintz
