New Delhi. Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh created history by winning the World Chess Championship in Singapore on Thursday, December 12. He became the youngest player to win this title. At the same time, Gukesh became the second Indian player to become a world champion in chess after Vishwanathan Anand. Gukesh won the title by defeating China's Ding Liren in the decisive 14th game.
In the final match of the FIDE World Chess Championship 2024, China's Ding Liren was playing with white pieces and Gukesh with black pieces. The match was heading towards a tiebreaker when Ding Liren got distracted in the 53rd move and made a mistake. The cautious D Gukesh did not give Liren a chance to make a comeback and eventually won the match by defeating last year's world champion. Gukesh became the 18th world champion of the World Chess Championship.
Who is D Gukesh?
D Gukesh is a resident of Chennai. His full name is Dommaraju Gukesh. Gukesh was born on 7 May 2006 in Chennai. He started playing chess at the age of 7. He was initially coached by Bhaskar Nagaiya. Nagaiya was an international chess player. After this, Vishwanathan Anand coached Gukesh along with giving him information about the game. Gukesh trains at the Anand Chess Academy (WACA).

Gukesh's father is a doctor and mother is a microbiologist by profession. He fell in love with this game during his school days. Due to his excellent performance, he progressed rapidly. Gukesh also won the FIDE Candidates Chess Tournament at the age of 17. He then became the youngest player to do so.
